On February 26, 2018, businesses, organizations, and community leaders from all across northwest Ohio attended the 2018 RGP Annual Meeting at the Pinnacle in Maumee, Ohio. This event is hosted every year by the Regional Growth Partnership (RGP), one of our community partners.
Headquartered in Toledo, the RGP is the lead economic development group serving our region and 17 countries in northwest Ohio – including Lucas County.
During this event, they reported on some of the exciting things happening in northwest Ohio which were later outlined in their 2017 Annual Report.
There’s no doubt about it: northwest Ohio is booming, and the future only looks brighter.
Here’s a quick look at the top five takeaways from the 2017 RGP Annual Report.
1) The Toledo region is making a comeback.
As RGP Chairman Doug Pontsler pointed out, the Toledo region is considered to be the 14th best city for migration of Millennials in the nation! Also, Toledo is the #1 city that makes it easier to get rich and is fourth in the nation for achieving the American dream.
2) Almost 3,900 new jobs were created in northwest Ohio in 2017.
The region is growing, and nothing demonstrates that as well as new job creation. Consider the fact that in 2017, 3,897 new jobs were created in northwest Ohio!
3) 12,519 jobs were retained in northwest Ohio in 2017.
Besides new job creation, job retention is one of the biggest indicators of a region’s economic growth. In 2017, 12,519 new jobs were retained in our region.
4) Food processing is a booming industry in our region.
Food processing has proved to be one of the largest industries growing in northwest Ohio. In 2017, 661 new jobs were created in this industry, and more than 16,000 people were employed in the food processing space across our region.
In addition, more than $555M of new investments were made in the industry in the past three years. We can only expect this industry to continue to grow!
5) Manufacturing is on the rise in northwest Ohio, too.
Remember our blog post a few months ago about the success we’ve seen with our WorkReady Manufacturing program? Part of the reason we created our program was on account of the recent uptick in manufacturing in Lucas County.
This trend has echoed throughout the entire 17-county region that the RGP represents. In 2017, 1,660 new advanced manufacturing jobs were created in northwest Ohio, with investments increasing by 400% to $1.5B.
2017 was a fantastic year for northwest Ohio. Business is booming, jobs are growing, and we’re on the move towards exciting and new growth opportunities.
We’re proud to be a part of this great region and can’t wait to see where the future takes us!
